Raymond T. Lavallee

Lavallee, Assistant Professor of Teaching, was killed in an automobile accident in Cedar Falls on Saturday morning, March 1. Mr. Lavallee was born in Old Town, Maine, in 1921. He received the B.A. degree from the University of Maine in 1949 and the M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1952. Additional summer work included study at the Colby-Swarthmore Summer School of Languages, the University of Paris (under a grant from the U.S. Office of Education), and the University of Maine (as a participant in a National Defense Education Act workshop). Under a grant from the U.S. Office of Education, 1959-60, Mr. Lavallee served as a Fulbright exchange teacher in Dinant, Belgium. Prior to joining the staff at the University of Northern Iowa in 1965, he served as chairman of the Foreign Languages Department for the Iowa City public schools. Mr. Lavallee was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Iowa State Education Association, and National Education Association. The Nottger Funeral Home in Cedar Falls is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Cedar Falls, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The flag will be flown at half-mast Tuesday afternoon, and the Campanile bells will be played during the time of the funeral service in memory of Mr. Lavallee. Those who wish to make contributions to a memorial may do so through the University of Northern Iowa Foundation for the Martin Luther Scholarship Fund or the Malcolm Price Laboratory School Scholarship Fund. A memorial is also being established through the University of Iowa Foundation. Raymond T. Lavallee, Assistant Professor of Teaching, lost his life in an automobile accident on March 1, 1969. He had served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department at the Price Laboratory School since joining the University staff in 1964. Mr. Lavallee was born in Old Town, Maine, in 1921. He received the B.A. degree from the University of Maine in 1949 and the M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1952. He took additional post-graduate work at the University of Iowa, the University of Paris, and the University of Maine. Mr. Lavallee contributed in significant ways to the profession he cherished. He was instrumental in developing the foreign language program of the Iowa City Public Schools during the eleven years he spent there, the last six as Department Chairman. He spent one year as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher to Dinant, Belgium, several summers on the staff of the University of Iowa, and served as Assistant Director of three Summer Institutes sponsored by the University of Northern Iowa. He was President of the Iowa Association of Teachers of French and a master of three modern languages at the time of his death. His wife, Felicia Shane Lavallee, and his two sons, Jeffrey and Matthew, feel his loss most keenly. That sense of loss is shared, however, by his many friends and colleagues who remember his love for all children--particularly for his two sons, the great respect he held for his chosen profession, and his ability to make friends of people from all walks of life.
