      Raymond Schlicher 12/19/90 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SERVICES FRIDAY (DEC. 21) FOR DR. RAYMOND J. SCHLICHER. EMERITUS DEAN OF CONTINUING EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA CEDAR FALLS--Dr. Raymond J. Schlicher, 79, of 115 W. 14th St., Cedar Falls, emeritus dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs at the University of Northern Iowa, died Tuesday, December 18, 1990, of natural causes. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 21) at First United Methodist Church, West 8th and Washington Streets, Cedar Falls, with Richardson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He received a B.A. degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1935, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa, in 1939 and 1949, respectively. He taught junior and senior high school in schools of Shannon City, Zearing, Elkader, Fort Madison, and Iowa City, Iowa, and was senior personnel counselor at the University of Iowa, prior to joining the UNI staff in 1949, as an assistant professor of education. From 1951 through 1958, he served as director of the Iowa State Teachers College Placement Bureau, was named director of Extension and Placement in 1958, and director of Extension and Field Services in 1965. He was serving as dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs at the time of his retirement in 1980. Schlicher continued to be active in Continuing Education to the time of his death. Among the many special programs with which he assisted were, for many years, the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and Iowa Elderhostel. He was the UNI faculty representative to the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) from 1961-1976. He received the UNI Alumni Service Award in 1968, was named Administrator of the Year by the UNI Association of Office Personnel in 1980, and inducted into the UNI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 as the recipient of its first meritorious service award. He was a member of numerous civic and professional organizations, including the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Club, National University Continuing Education Association, Cedar Falls Historical Society, Iowa State Historical Society, and the First Methodist United Methodist Church of Cedar Falls. He was a past president of the Association for Field Service Teacher Education, Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity, the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Cedar Falls Community Chest, prior to its merger with the Cedar Valley United Way. Schlicher was born December 12, 1911, in Centerville, Iowa. He married Genevieve A. Fowler, May 5, 1938, in Iowa City. He is survived by his wife; a son, Dr. John Schlicher, of Wichita, Kansas.; two daughters, Jenifer Breyer of Syracuse, NewYork, and Mary Schlicher of Clarion; and five grandchildren. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 20) at the Richardson Funeral Home, Main and West 7th Streets, in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, or the UNI Foundation.
