Mitchell A. Greene

Mitchell A. Greene, Ph. D., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born in Georgetown, South Carolina, in 1927. He married Mamie Lois Taylor. Mr. Greene served in the US Army. He received his bachelor's degree from Dillard University, his master's degree from Case Western Reserve University, and his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He taught social work at the University of Northern Iowa from 1972 until retiring in 1994. Survivors include: his wife; four children (from his marriage to Robert Ann Greene); Mitchell III (and his son Samuel) of Montclair, New Jersey, Ann (Mark), Hilliard, and Lois Greene, all of Brooklyn, New York; and granddaughter Dailey of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Greene, a former faculty member in the Department of Social Work, passed away on December 10, 2003. Dr. Greene taught at UNI from 1972 until his retirement to Texas in 1994. Dr. Greene had wide ranging interests and did research on child development and parenting. He was a frequent speaker on race relations. His long career in public service and academia began as a child welfare worker in 1953. After serving as a school principal for a year, he was a senior psychiatric social worker at Logansport State Hospital in Indiana until 1959. He was a faculty member at Iowa Wesleyan College before becoming the Coordinator of the Afro-American Program at the University of Iowa, where he also earned his Ph. D. After joining the faculty at UNI, Mitch continued a part-time practice as a consultant at the Black Hawk-Grundy County Mental Health Center. Dr. Greene was known as a cordial, caring Southern gentleman.
