In Memory of Dr. Thomas Joseph Remington Professor Emeritus, University of Northern Iowa
Tom was born March 21, 1939, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of William Harley and Blanche (Conroy) Remington. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in both English and Philosophy from Regis College in Denver, Colorado, and his Master of Arts and Ph. D. in English from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. On June 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to Gail M. Soerens in Manhattan, Kansas. She died September 19, 1995. He taught English at California State University, Chico, California, from 1965 to 1970. From 1970 until his retirement in 1997, he served as Professor in English Language and Literature at the University of Northern Iowa, where he served as chair of the University Faculty Senate (1982 to 1984), College of Humanities and Fine Arts Faculty Senate (1974 to 1978), and the Graduate Faculty Council (1978 to 1982), and was coordinator of the English Graduate Program. He served as treasurer of the Science Fiction Research Association from 1989 to 1990 and was Visiting Professor from 1993 to 1994 at Regensburg University in Germany. Tom is survived by one son, Theodore J. of Coralville, Iowa; one daughter, Sister Ann Marie Remington, O.C.S.O., of Dubuque, Iowa, and one sister, Sister Blanche Marie Remington, S.C.L., Santa Monica, California. Tom died Saturday, September 4, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ann and Jeanne. Richardson Funeral Service.
Dr. Thomas J. Remington, 60, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, September 4, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of cancer. He was born March 21, 1939, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, son of William Harley and Blanche Conroy Remington. He married Gail M. Soerens on June 5, 1965, in Manhattan, Kansas. She died September 19, 1995. Mr. Remington earned a double major in English and philosophy from Regis College, Denver, Colorado, and a master's and doctorate in English from Kansas State University. He taught English at California State University, Chico, from 1965 to 1970, then was professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Northern Iowa from 1970 to 1997, when he retired. He was past chair of the University of Northern Iowa Faculty Senate and the College of Humanities and Fine Art Faculty Senate. He served as visiting professor from 1993 to 1994 at Regensburg University, Germany, and also was past coordinator of the English Graduate Program at UNI. Survived by: a son, Theodore J. of Coralville; a daughter, Sister Ann Marie Remington, O.C.S.O., of Dubuque; and a sister, Sister Blanche Marie Remington, S.C.L., of Santa Monica, California. Preceded in death by: two sisters, Ann and Jeanne. Memorial services: 7 p.m. today at St. Stephen's Catholic Student Center, with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
