Leta E. Strottman Speir

                     Leta Spier Leta Elizabeth Spier, 98, of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, died Saturday, October 30, 2004, at the Waverly Health Center of natural causes. She was born March 26, 1906, near Readlyn, daughter of William and Mary Knief Knief. On November 24, 1927, she married Paul H. Strottmann in Readlyn. He died in 1962. On January 6, 1973, she married Clarence A. Spier in Waverly. He died July 14, 1988. Mrs. Spier graduated from St. Paul's Lutheran Parochial School, then worked as a waitress in a cafe in Readlyn. She and her first husband farmed south, then later north of Readlyn. She later moved to Cedar Falls and was employed at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1971. Survivors include: a son, Dr. M. Paul Strottmann of Iowa City; a daughter, Jean A. Strottmann of Waverly; a stepson, Lloyd Spier of Cedar Rapids; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Sue Schmidt of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: a son, Lyle A. Strothmann; six brothers; and three sisters. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, with burial in St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery, Readlyn. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, and for an hour before services on Tuesday at the church.
