John W. Mitchell, 71, of 1010 Washington Street, died Wednesday, July 22, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of cancer. He was born October 22, 1920, in Murphysboro, Illinois, son of the Rev. R. Frank and Anna Mae Smith Mitchell. He married Eunice MacInnis on October 14, 1944, in Wooster, Ohio. Mr. Mitchell was a professor of music education at the University of Northern Iowa until 1971, and after retirement in 1987 was an investment counselor in financial management. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster, his master's degree from Oberlin Conservatory, Overland, Ohio, and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He was past president of the Cedar Falls Kiwanis; past lieutenant governor of Iowa/Nebraska District No. 8 Kiwanis; and past president of Scottish Heritage Society. Survivors include his wife; a son, Tom A. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Charlotte Mitchell Smith of Chicago; two grandchildren; a brother, Franklin of Lawrence, Kansas; and a sister, Evelyn Townshend of Winter Park, Florida. Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. There will be no visitation. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
