Hanson, 59, a dedicated educator and professional, died Friday, January 9, 1998, of cancer. Carole was an Associate Professor of Leisure Services in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services, University of Northern Iowa, for the past seventeen years. Keenly committed to students and others, Carole will be remembered as a caring, thoughtful person who was dedicated to the park and recreation movement. She was sincerely interested in the welfare of her students and strongly concerned about their professional development and success. Carole valued greatly the park and recreation profession and was especially skilled at maintaining and building close relationships with professionals throughout the state of Iowa. Dr. Hanson was born October 26, 1938, in Faribault, Minnesota. She graduated with a B. A. degree in English from Luther College in 1960 and an M. A. degree in Recreation Administration from Michigan State University in 1967. Dr. Hanson earned a Doctorate of Education degree in Community and Human Resources from the University of Nebraska in 1979. Dr. Hanson began her career as an English and Journalism teacher in Canton, South Dakota. Later she was employed by the YWCA as Recreation Program Director in both Waterloo, Iowa, and Battle Creek, Michigan. She was the Recreation Supervisor for the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan, from 1967 to 1972 before joining the faculty of the University of Iowa as an Instructor in 1972. From 1975 to 1981 Dr. Hanson was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Nebraska. In 1980, Dr. Hanson joined the faculty of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services at the University of Northern Iowa. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she served briefly as the Coordinator of the Leisure Services Division and for many years was responsible for coordinating the internship program Dr. Hanson is survived by her mother, Judith M. (Jurgenson) Hanson of Faribault; and a brother, Albert Wayne Hanson of Faribault. A scholarship fund has been established in her name by the University of Northern Iowa Foundation.
