May 16, 1986 BARBARA YAGER RECEIVES NATIONAL AAHPERD HONOR AWARD Dr. Barbara Yager, professor emeritus of physical education at the University of Northern Iowa, has received the 1986 Honor Award for meritorious service from the Central District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (CDAAPHPERD). Yager was recognized for her years of service as a physical education instructor and her professional service to AAHPERD at the state, district, and national levels. During her thirty-five years at UNI, Yager was coordinator of the Physical Education Division and served one year as special assistant to the Dean of Education.  She received a University Service Award in 1985 for her accomplishments as Chair of the University Faculty and the UNI Presidential Search Committee. Her professional activities include serving as vice president of HAPAHE and president of the Central District Association of that organization.  She earned a service award from the Iowa AHPERD for her committee work and service as Chair of the organization's Professional Preparation Section. Yager was also active on the AAHPERD Aquatics Council and the Necrology Committee of CDAAHPERD. Her writings and presentations were in the area of professional preparation. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Ohio State University and an Ed.D. degree from the University of Southern California.  She taught physical education at the laboratory schools at Ohio State and Ball State Universities prior to teaching at UNI. Yager was honored along with six other professionals at a ceremony at the 53rd Annual Central District AAHPERD Convention in Casper, Wyoming.  The recipients were elected by the District Recognition Committee, composed of one member from each of the nine district states and a non-voting chairman.  State AAHPERD committees submit nominations to the district committee in their state. Candidates for the Honor Award must be AAHPERD members, at least 35 years old, who have at least 10 years of experience as a teacher, supervisor, or administrator in the field.  They must also possess high moral character and personal integrity.   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Barbara Yager, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, following a long illness with cancer. She was born July 31, 1923, in Van Wert, Ohio.  She was a professor in the Women's Physical Education Department at the University of Northern Iowa from 1949 until her retirement in 1985.  Later she taught citizenship for ten years while living in Arizona.  She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls, for thirty years. Survived by:  a niece, Sharon (Herbert) Hibshman of Myerstown, Pennsylvania, and her two children; a sister-in-law; and her close friend. Barbara J. Darling of Cedar Falls. Preceded in death by:  a brother, Paul Yager. Services:  will be held at a later date.  Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
