     Susan Chilcott 7/11/86 -- IMMEDIATE RELEASE CHILCOTT TO HEAD UNI'S RENAMED PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE Susan M. Chilcott, publications director at the University of Northern Iowa since 1976, has been named director of public relations for UNI, effective Monday, July 14, 1986.  The Office of Public Information Services which she will direct, will also change its name to Office of Public Relations. Chilcott succeeds Donald A. Kelly, who has been director of public information services at Northern Iowa since 1971.  Kelly will be a senior information specialist for the institution, working directly with Dr. Rick Stinchfield, director of planning and policy management. "Her educational background, professional experiences, and personal strengths give Susan Chilcott exceptional qualifications for this position," said Stinchfield.  "Her strong planning, organizational, and management skills combine to make her a results-oriented individual who has a public relations vision for UNI that we believe will make exciting things happen." Stinchfield said the office name was being changed to more accurately reflect the overall scope of work currently performed by the staff in its publications, news service, and in-office photography areas.  The office is also responsible for oversight of the University's new Visitor and Information Center which opened July 7. Chilcott earned a bachelor's degree from Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Nebraska, in English, and a master of arts degree in communication from Creighton University, Omaha. Before joining the UNI staff, she was public relations director for Alverno College in Milwaukee, assistant to the vice president for development of the Metropolitan Milwaukee YWCA, university editor at the University of Wisconsin--Whitewater, and journalism instructor and assistant public information director for Midland Lutheran College. At UNI, she has coordinated the University's United Way campaign for two years, served on the Select Committee on University Planning, chaired the Institutional Image Committee, was president of the Professional and Scientific Council for two years, and a member of the University Foundation Direct Mail Committee for five years. She is past national president of Women in Communications, Inc., (WICI) and chaired the publications program track for the 1986 CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Mid-America District Meeting. She is also past national president of the Midland Lutheran College Alumni Association. Chilcott is a recent graduate of the first class in the metropolitan community leadership program, Leadership Investment for Tomorrow. As head of UNI's publications area, she and her staff have amassed numerous awards during the past decade. Chilcott received the Professional Excellence in Communicational--Iowa Award in 1986 from the Northeast Iowa Chapter of WICI. She has won honors in seven of the past eight CASE District competitions, and received multiple honors from the National School Public Relations Association, University and College Designers Association, and the Iowa Art Directors Association.
