Jennie Syhlman, 88, of Grundy Center, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long-Term Care Unit, Grundy Center, of natural causes; survivors include two brothers, Jake and Herman Van Hauen, both of Grundy Center; and two sisters, Tillie Pruin of Waterloo and Gladys Meyer of Cedar Falls; she was preceded in death by her husband, Dude, in 1967; and a brother, Henry Van Hauen; services are 1:30 p.m. today at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, with burial in the church cemetery; Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, is in charge of arrangements; memorials may be directed to the church; Mrs. Syhlman and her husband farmed in the Dike area and she was later employed by the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, as the boy's dorm hall custodian, retiring in 1986.
