Maurer, Associate Professor of English, occurred at University hospital in Iowa City on Friday evening, February 14, following extensive surgery,. Dr. Maurer, who received the B.A. from State University of Iowa in 1943, the M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1947, and the Ph.D., from State University of Iowa in 1961, came to this college as an Instructor in English in 1948. He taught in New Hampton, Iowa, schools prior to coming to the college. Dr. Maurer was a very capable and respected member of our staff. He was much interested in the crusade for equal rights for all people and he gave generously of his efforts and time in this endeavor, He had served as president of the local chapter of the Civil Liberties Union and as advisor to the SCI chapter. He was an advisor for the Jeffersonian Club at the college and was active in Democratic party activities, Also he was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Iowa Colleges Conference in English, A memorial service will be held for the late Dr. Maurer at the Methodist Student Center at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 18. Dr. David Bluhm will be in charge of the service. The family has requested no flowers. Any gifts in Dr. Maurer's memory may be left with the secretary of the Department of Languages, Speech, and Literature. Dr. Maurer is survived by his wife and four children, all at home at 2215 Olive Street, and by his mother, a sister, and a brother. Dr. Edwin J. Maurer, associate professor of English at the State College of Iowa, died about 5:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 14, 1964) at University Hospital in Iowa City following extensive surgery. Dr. Maurer, 42, had been associated with SCI since 1948. He was born in New Hampton on September 24, 1921, and had taught in the New Hampton schools. He was married to the former Elisabeth Helen Smith of Cedar Falls on July 3, 1949. A graduate of the State University of Iowa, Dr. Maurer earned the M. A. degree at the University of Chicago, and the doctoral degree at SUI. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and had served as president of the local chapter and adviser to the SCI chapter of the Civil Liberties Union. He had been adviser to the Jeffersonian Club at the college and was active in Democratic party activities. Dr. Maurer is survived by his wife; four children, Candida, Hillary, Gavin, and Derek, all at home, 2215 Olive St.; and by his mother, Mrs. Ruth D. Maurer of Waverly; a sister, Mrs. Charles Moss of Norman, Oklahoma; and a brother, J. David Maurer of St. Louis, Missouri. Memorial services will be held at the Methodist Student Center in Cedar Falls, at 10 a. m. Tuesday (Feb. 18), with Dr. David Bluhm officiating.
