DOROTHY L. MOON, In Memoriam Faculty and friends are saddened to hear of the death of Dorothy L. Moon, who retired from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977 after 31 years of teaching at the university. She had been an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education for Women. Miss Moon, who passed away at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home September 7, 1994, after a brief illness, had remained active in volunteer work in Cedar Falls. Dorothy was born March 18, 1913, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. She received her B. Ed. from Northern Illinois State Teachers College, DeKalb, Illinois, and her M.A. from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She completed additional graduate work at the University of Oregon and the University of Minnesota and studied movement education in England. In 1960 she was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach physical education at St. Vincent Girls' High School in the West Indies. Dorothy Moon was hired at Iowa State Teachers College in 1947 by Dr. Monica Wild, the department head, to teach physical education methods to elementary education majors and to teach activity classes with specialty in field hockey and rhythms. Over the years she was especially noted for her work in folk dance. She took a professional development leave to study dances in various European countries. She sponsored the Folk Dance Festival for many years and in 1957 she assisted students in founding the Folk Dance Club. Her strong leadership and enthusiasm provided the base for the club's success. Dorothy Moon is remembered as a dedicated teacher who truly cared about her students; and as a person who displayed dignity and who was kind, gracious, sincere, and supportive in all situations. Those who knew her feel keenly the personal and professional loss to the community. She was an active volunteer in the Sartori Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Public Library, Cedar Falls Historical Society, and was a life-time member of the Girl Scouts of America. She is survived by a brother, Paul Moon, of San Diego, three nieces, one nephew, and good friend Amanda Langemo, of Cedar Falls. Memorial services will be at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, Tuesday, September 20, 1994, at I p.m. There will be no visitation, as she has deeded her body to the University of' Iowa.
