Dr. Charles F. Allegre, Emeritus Professor of Biology, died Wednesday afternoon, 4 November 1981, at Sartori Hospital, Cedar Falls.
Dr. Allegre was born at Osage City, Kansas, 6 October 1911. He earned his B. S. degree in 1936 from Emporia State College. His graduate work was done at the University of Iowa where he was awarded an M. S. degree in 1941 and the Ph. D. degree in zoology in 1947. During his graduate study he specialized in protozoology with Theodore L. Jahn as his advisor and mentor.
His long career in education started in 1929 when he taught in a rural school in Kansas. He later taught in high schools in Ness City, Kansas, and Burlington, Kansas. After receiving his doctorate he went to Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, where he was associate professor and acting head of the Department of Biology. He joined the faculty of Iowa State Teachers College in September 1950. He retired from the University of Northern Iowa with emeritus status 1 June 1980.
Dr. Allegre was a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Delta Kappa, Beta Beta Beta, American Society of Zoologists, American Society of Protozoologists, American Microscopical Society, and the Society of Systematic Zoologists. He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a Fellow of the Iowa Academy of Science and was on the Science Talent Search Committee of the Academy and served as its chairman from 1967 to 1971.
He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Cedar Falls and served as its president in 1978-79. He was active in a number of other community organizations including the Black Hawk County Cancer Board, the United Campus Christian Ministry, and the Westminister Foundation Board. On campus, he was sponsor for Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity, president of Faculty Men's Club, and served for a number of years as the advisor for pre-medical students.
He married Mildred Irene Snickles on 7 June 1938. She survives him as do their two daughters, Susan Irene (Mrs. Kirk) McQuiston of Lowell, Indiana, and Laurnet Marie (Mrs. Scott) Spalding of Maquoketa, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, 7 November 1981, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls.
