Caryl A. Middleton

Dr. Caryl A. Middleton, Emeritus Professor of Teaching, Office of Student Teaching, passed away on October 25 at the age of 84. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, Christian Crusaders, or Oster Regent Theatre. Dr. Middleton is survived by his wife, Connie, who resides at 4010 Clearview Drive, Cedar Falls, a son Howard of Atlanta, Georgia, and a daughter Carolyn Jarvey of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Dr. Middleton joined the faculty in 1949 as a Coordinator of Student Teachers and extension college faculty. Prior to joining the University of Northern Iowa he was principal of Perkins School in Childrens Hospital, University of Iowa, high school principal and secondary teacher of English, speech, drama, French, and instrumental music in Waterloo, Atlantic, Iowa, and Soldier, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1944 through 1946. Dr. Middleton was a recognized professional earning his B.A. from Iowa State Teachers College in 1934, an M.A. in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1955 from the University of Iowa. During his professional career, he contributed to the professional literature, served on both the graduate and undergraduate faculty, and was a member of numerous professional associations including ATE - Iowa Chapter and PDK, president of local chapter. He was awarded the 30-year PDK recognition, the UNI Alumni Service Award in 1972, and the Kiwanian of the Year in 1974. Dr. Middleton is remembered best by the many student teachers he supervised for thirty-one years in Waterloo. CEDAR FALLS - Caryl A. Middleton, 84, of 4010 Clearview Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 25, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes. He was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Grundy Center, son of Asa C. and Alcie DePew Middleton. He married Helen Norby in 1937. She died in 1962. He married Constance "Connie" Ottman on April 6,1963, in Cedar Falls. Mr. Middleton was a coordinator of student teachers at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1981. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He received the Kiwanian of the Year award in 1973. Survived by: his wife; a son, Howard of Atlanta; a daughter, Carolyn Jarvey of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and four grandsons and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: two brothers, Milo and Arnett. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with inurnment at 10 a.m. in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, Christian Crusaders, or Oster Regent Theatre.
