Arnold J. Freitag

Arnold J. Freitag was the son of Henry and Frieda Schipper Freitag.  He was born December 29, 1922 on the family farm home in rural Roann, Indiana. He entered the U. S. Army in February of 1943, where he served for twenty-three years with the 843rd Signal Service Battalion in the Yukon of Canada Following his discharge from the U.S, Army, he returned to Western Electric and then enrolled under the GI Bill at Valparaiso University, graduating with a B. S. degree from Purdue University in 1950. In 1957, he received his master’s degree from Iowa State University. His life’s work was devoted to education at the secondary, state, and university levels. His career included teaching and administration at the Wellsburg Public School in Wellsburg, Iowa, the Sarasota Junior High and Riverview Senior High in Sarasota, Florida, the Florida State Department of Education in Tallahassee, and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He married Audrey Kasischke on September 3, 1949, in Hubbard, Iowa.  They were married for sixty years until Audrey’s death on July 31, 2009. He was active in various local and national professional organizations. After retirement, he coordinated reunions of two army veteran groups, edited family histories, went motor homing with Audrey and snow birded in Sarasota.  He has been a member of St. John Lutheran Church since 1975.

He is survived by daughters Judy (David D’Arcy) Freitag of Evanston, Illinois, Ruth (Edward) Lovas of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and Amy (Victor) Cactus of Tucson, Arizona; six grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, and Arlen D'Arcy, and Karina, Cameron and Kyle Lovas. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and an infant daughter, Janet Louise Freitag. Services will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls with Interment at Hubbard Cemetery, Hubbard, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:30 until service time at the church.  Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the St. John Lutheran Church or NewAldaya Lifescapes.
