University Archives

University Archives collects, preserves and shares materials that reflect the history, experiences, memories and activities of the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) community.

About University Archives

The University Archives collection is intended to serve as documentary evidence of past activity of the campus community. The collection includes materials created by and for individuals, groups, departments, colleges, units, centers and other entities related to UNI. This includes materials reflecting intellectual and academic pursuits, administrative work and daily tasks, special events, social and cultural experiences, extra-curricular activities, and other aspects of work and life in the UNI community. Examples include correspondence, reports, minutes, photographs and audiovisual recordings, yearbooks, newspapers, scrapbooks, news releases and subject files. The collection has evolved as the academic programs, administrators, faculty, students, staff and life on campus has changed over time. A limited number of archival series are included in OneSearch! with the location designation SPEC COLL A.

Our Finding Aids

Finding aids are detailed guides describing the contents of our archival collections. Use finding aids to search, browse and explore our archival collections and their contents, and to determine which collections may be of use to you.

University Archives is organized in record groups and series, which are roughly in alignment with the university's organizational structure. Record groups are the major administrative divisions of the overall collection. Record series within these record groups are the discrete, distinct collections. Record series vary considerably in size and scope, as some large series consist of 50 or 100 boxes, and other series are only a single sheet of paper. Access to portions of some series is restricted.

Some collections have additional print inventories of information in the collection control file. The control files are accessible upon request. Additionally, the Information File serves as a good starting point for a variety of topics represented in University Archives collections.

UNI Special Collections & University Archives uses ArchivesSpace to create, manage and display collection finding aids. You can also access ArchivesSpace by clicking any of the record group headings below. Doing so will take you directly to ArchivesSpace. Please note: Special Collections & University Archives (SC&UA) collects, preserves and provides access to rare, valuable and delicate collections of books, manuscripts and institutional records. Materials located in SC&UA come from a broad range of sources and time periods. Some of these materials may contain offensive stereotypes, ideas, visuals or language. Such materials serve as evidence of the era in which they were created, and are part of the historical record. Their presence should be viewed and considered within their historical context. They do not represent the views of the University of Northern University, the Library, or SC&UA, which strive to create and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment.
