HOWARD O. REED, EMERITUS PROFESSOR AT UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA, DEAD AT 83

Dr. Howard O. Reed, 83, long-time head and emeritus professor of industrial technology at the University of Northern Iowa, died Thursday, December 21, 1989, at Friendship Village Retirement Center, Waterloo, following a massive stroke. Services will be at a later date. His body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. The Dahl, Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, is in charge of arrangements.

Reed served as head of the then Department of Industrial Arts and Technology at the University of Northern Iowa for seventeen years, from 1954 until his retirement in 1971. He was honored by the Iowa Vocational Association in 1971 with the significant contribution award in industrial arts to "individuals who have, through their professional activities, contributed significantly to the development of vocational education."

Before coming to UNI, Reed served for 25 years as instructor of industrial arts in high schools in Tennessee and Illinois, and as associate professor of industrial arts at Illinois State University.

He was born February 22, 1906, in Newton, Illinois. He received the B. S. degree from Bradley University in 1931, the master of arts degree from Northwestern University in 1938, and the M. Ed. and Ed. D. degrees from the University of Illinois, in 1946 and 1948, respectively. He married Edith Gray, April 8, 1928, in Olney, Illinois.

Following his retirement, Reed was honored by faculty and staff colleagues, alumni, students, and friends with the establishment of the Howard O. Reed Recognition Fund through the UNI Foundation. When the Industrial Technology Center opened in 1975, the building's Auditorium was named in his honor.

Reed was a past president of the Iowa Industrial Education Association. He initiated the groundwork that led to the establishment of the State Committee on Industrial Arts Teacher Education. He was a member of the Mississippi Valley Industrial Arts Conference, the American Industrial Arts Association, and the American Council on Industrial Arts Teacher Education. Locally, he was a past president of the Cedar Falls Rotary Club, active on committees of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, and held various positions in his church, First Christian Church of Cedar Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Edith; two daughters, Patricia Reed Gallagher and Lois Reed O'Marah; and a son, Rex H. Reed. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Cedar Falls, or the Howard O. Reed Recognition Fund of the UNI Foundation.
