Date: December 17, 1973

Miss Margaret Fullerton, Emeritus Cataloger and Associate Professor, died Monday, December 17, 1973, at Sartori Hospital, following a heart attack suffered a week earlier.

Miss Fullerton was born in Cedar Falls, November 1, 1904, and was the daughter of the late Professor C. A. Fullerton, distinguished member of the Music Department of Iowa State Teachers College for many years. She received her B. A. degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1925, an M. A. degree in Speech Education from Columbia University in 1930, and a B. S. degree in Library Science also from Columbia in 1938.

After teaching speech and music in the public schools at Stratford and Delta, Iowa, Miss Fullerton served in a variety of professional library positions at Grinnell College; Joint University Libraries in Nashville, Tennessee; Army Air Field Library in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and at the Des Moines Public Library before joining the library staff at UNI in 1947 as a cataloger. For nine years she served as Head Cataloger, but in 1956 asked to be relieved of her administrative responsibilities in order to be freer to devote time to the well-known series of music books which she co-authored over a period of twenty years. She retired August 31, 1972, at the rank of Associate Professor after more than twenty-five years of outstanding service to the institution.

Miss Fullerton's body may be viewed at the Nottger-Erickson Funeral Home after 10:00 a.m., Tuesday. Private burial services will be held in Fairview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 19, and Memorial Services will be conducted at the United Church of Christ, 9204 University Avenue, at 1:30 that afternoon. The flag will be flown at half-mast, and the Campanile bells will be played during the time of the funeral service in memory of Miss Fullerton.

Miss Fullerton was appointed to the library staff as Catalog Librarian May 1, 1947, and served the university library more than twenty-five years, retiring with emeritus status at the rank of Associate Professor August 31, 1972. At the time of her retirement I wrote to her that in thirty years of library administration, "I have never had a professional staff member who has enjoyed both the professional respect and personal affection of her colleagues to the extent you have." I am certain that anyone who had the good fortune to be associated with Miss Fullerton will concur with that assessment. She was as fine a person, in every respect, as one would ever hope to know.
