Commencement

Since 1877, the University of Northern Iowa has celebrated the graduation of its students from their courses of study with commencement exercises.  These exercises typically included processions in academic regalia, speeches by school officials and visiting dignitaries, and reunions of alumni,  Initially there was one Commencement ceremony at the conclusion of the spring term.  But, over time, exercises were also held at the conclusion of other terms.

Over the last few years the Special Collections and University Archives staff has assembled highlights of these exercises.  We gathered information primarily from commencement programs, college catalogues, and student newspaper articles.  Information for many years is voluminous.  Information for some early years does not seem to be available at all.
