William O. Maricle

Dr. William O. Maricle, UNI professor emeritus, passed away on April 11, 2000, at Worthington, Minnesota, at age 83. He was born in Galatia, Illinois, on June 27, 1916.  Survivors include his wife Johanna Yungclaf Maricle; daughters Kathryn of Tucson, Arizona, and Paula of Worthington, Minnesota; sons Scott of Olympia, Washington, and Mark of Jamestown, Colorado, and three grandchildren. He attended Walkoli High School for three years and graduated from Christopher Community High School in 1934.  He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1939 with an undergraduate degree in education with a major in mathematics.  He received his Master of Arts degree in 1948 from the University of Illinois and his Doctor of Education degree in 1969 from the University of Colorado. His professional teaching career included: University of Northern Iowa (Iowa State Teachers College), Department of Teaching, Chair, Department of Mathematics, 1949-1952; Assistant Professor, University of Northern Iowa, Chair, Department of Mathematics, Price Laboratory School, 1953-56.  From 1956 to 1970 he served as Coordinator of the student teaching center in the Fort Dodge Community School District. In 1970, he returned to Cedar Falls to coordinate the student teaching program in the Cedar Falls Center until his retirement in June 1981. In addition to his teaching and coordinating of student teaching, he taught graduate level extension classes at UNI over an extended period time. Maricle, 83, of Worthington, Minnesota, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Luverne Hospice Cottage, Luverne, Minnesota, of natural cases. He was born June 27, 1916, in Hamilton County, Illinois, son of Auda and Monnie Harris Maricle.  He married Dorothy Zischkau. She preceded him in death. He then married Joanna Yungclaf on June 3, 1956. Mr. Maricle attended Illinois State Normal University and then the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he received his master's degree.  He taught in public schools from 1937 to 1941, then served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War as a communications officer.  He taught at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and continued his participation in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as lieutenant colonel after serving thirty-one years. He was a professor at UNI, retiring in 1981. Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Kathryn L. Maricle of Tucson, Arizona, and Paula J. Kreckelberg of Worthington; two sons, Scott F. of Olympia, Washington, and Mark W., of Jamestown, Colorado; three grandchildren; and a sister, Lourene Rhoads of Worthington. Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Worthington.  Lynch-Dingmann Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Worthington, is in charge of arrangements.
