February 18, 1997 PHYSICS PROFESSOR AT UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA NAMED OF ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA Roger Hanson, professor of physics at the University of Northern Iowa, has been named a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Hanson was recognized for this honor at the international meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and Acoustical Society of Japan which was held in Honolulu earlier this winter. He was awarded this honor for his contributions to musical acoustics and nonlinear vibrations of strings. According to the Bylaws on advancement to fellowship in the Acoustical Society of America, "Any member or associate who has rendered conspicuous service or made notable contributions to the advancement or diffusion of the knowledge of acoustics or the fostering of its practical applications shall be eligible for election to Fellowship in the Society." Nominations for Fellow candidates are made by full members or Fellows of the Society who then serve as sponsors for the candidate. This prestigious honor is awarded to approximately eleven percent of the members in the Acoustical Society of America. After a person is advanced to Fellowship, his or her citation is published in the Acoustical News USA section of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Hanson joined the UNI faculty in 1969, and is a former head of the Department of Physics. He received his B.S. degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska, and did post-doctoral study at Harvard University. He taught at Grinnell College from 1956 to 1969, and during his tenure there, also served as a research physicist at the University of Aarhus in Denmark for one year, as a visiting professor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for one summer, and as a senior physicist three summers at the Ames Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission at Iowa State University.
