IN MEMORIAM Ralph J. Schwartz, Ph.D. On June 23, 2000, Ralph Schwartz, professor emeritus, 81, died of natural causes at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo. Ralph received the Ph. D. in speech pathology and audiology at Purdue University. His professional career began as a speech pathologist practitioner in Kansas at the American Red Cross, and the Institute of Logopedics, where he also served as an assistant professor and director of the Jardine Memorial Laboratory. He also was an administrator at the Children's Rehabilitation Institute for Cerebral Palsy in Baltimore, during the early years. Ralph came to the University of Northern Iowa in 1963, ultimately becoming an associate professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders, where he served until his retirement in 1989. His areas of expertise included voice, disorders of the larynx, and the relationship between the use of the larynx for speech and singing. He also was interested in congenital and neurological disorders, and established the department's program in working with individuals whose first language is not American English. In addition to Ralph's skills as a diagnostician and practitioner, he was known as a rigorous instructor. Ralph served on numerous department, college, and university committees. Ralph wrote articles in various professional publications and presented at national meetings. In addition, he presented papers on laryngeal function at several international congresses. Ralph belonged to many professional organizations such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Acoustical Society of America, the Cleft Palate Association, and the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. Our colleague will be remembered for his scholarliness and clinical expertise which greatly influenced his students, and ultimately, those with communicative disorders. He is survived by his wife, Jane Sherwin Schwartz, professor emerita. Schwartz, 81, of Waterloo, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Allen Hospital of natural causes. He was born March 14, 1919, in Chicago, son of Adolph and Mildred Cohen Schwartz. He married Jane Sherwin October 29, 1966, in Cedar Falls. Mr. Schwartz joined the University of Northern Iowa faculty in 1963 and was an instructor in the Department of Communicative Disorders until retiring in 1989. Survived by: his wife.
