Rod, Director of Library Services Date: December 17, 1973 Miss Margaret Fullerton, Emeritus Cataloger and Associate Professor, died Monday, December 17, 1973, at Sartori Hospital, following a heart attack suffered a week earlier. Miss Fullerton was born in Cedar Falls, November 1, 1904, and was the daughter of the late Professor C. A. Fullerton, distinguished member of the Music Department of Iowa State Teachers College for many years. She received her B. A. degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1925, an M. A. degree in Speech Education from Columbia University in 1930, and a B. S. degree in Library Science also from Columbia in 1938. After teaching speech and music in the public schools at Stratford and Delta, Iowa, Miss Fullerton served in a variety of professional library positions at Grinnell College; Joint University Libraries in Nashville, Tennessee; Army Air Field Library in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and at the Des Moines Public Library before joining the library staff at UNI in 1947 as a cataloger. For nine years she served as Head Cataloger, but in 1956 asked to be relieved of her administrative responsibilities in order to be freer to devote time to the well-known series of music books which she co-authored over a period of twenty years. She retired August 31, 1972, at the rank of Associate Professor after more than twenty-five years of outstanding service to the institution. Miss Fullerton's body may be viewed at the Nottger-Erickson Funeral Home after 10:00 a.m., Tuesday. Private burial services will be held in Fairview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 19, and Memorial Services will be conducted at the United Church of Christ, 9204 University Avenue, at 1:30 that afternoon. The flag will be flown at half-mast, and the Campanile bells will be played during the time of the funeral service in memory of Miss Fullerton. To: The Library Staff From: Donald O. Rod, Director Date: December 17, 1973 Miss Margaret Fullerton, emeritus member of the library staff, passed away early this morning at Sartori Hospital following a heart attack suffered a week previously. The Nottger-Erickson Funeral Home, 204 West Seerley Boulevard, is in charge of funeral arrangements. A private family burial service will be held in Fairview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 19, with a memorial service at 1 30 p.m. that day at the United Church of Christ, 9204 University Avenue, Cedar Falls. The body may be viewed at the funeral home after 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 18. Staff members who wish to attend the memorial service may do so on university time. Please check with your respective department heads if you wish to attend the service. Miss Fullerton was appointed to the library staff as Catalog Librarian May 1, 1947, and served the university library more than twenty-five years, retiring with emeritus status at the rank of Associate Professor August 31, 1972. At the time of her retirement I wrote to her that in thirty years of library administration, "I have never had a professional staff member who has enjoyed both the professional respect and personal affection of her colleagues to the extent you have." I am certain that anyone who had the good fortune to be associated with Miss Fullerton will concur with that assessment. She was as fine a person, in every respect, as one would ever hope to know. MARGARET FULLERTON Private committal services for Miss Margaret Fullerton, 69, of 2321 Franklin Street, Cedar Falls, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ. The Reverend Randall R. Teeuwen, pastor, will officiate at both services. Miss Fullerton died 1:31 a.m. Monday, December 17, 1973, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of a heart condition. She was born November 1, 1904, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Charles A. and Alma E. Gray Fullerton. She was a resident of Cedar Falls all her life, and was a retired librarian at the University of Northern Iowa. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, the AAUW, and the PEO. She was active in various other professional organizations. She is survived by one brother, Craig, Omaha, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister. The family suggests that memorials be directed to either the Heart Fund or the University of Northern Iowa.
