Maucker, President Date: March 17, 1969 Dr. Josef Schaefer, Emeritus Professor of German, passed away at his home in Cedar Falls on March 14, 1969, following a heart attack. He was born in Stetten, Germany, in 1896. After receiving the Ph. D. degree from the University of Freiburg in 1924, he came to the United States to serve as an attache at the German Consulate in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined the staff of University of Northern Iowa in 1926 as an instructor, and was advanced to the rank of assistant professor in 1929, to the rank of associate professor in 1933, and to the rank of professor in 1948, assuming emeritus status in 1964. He served as acting head of the Department of Languages during the 1953-54 academic year. Dr. Schaefer had been a member of the American Association of Teachers of German, American Association of Teachers of French, American Association of University Professors, National Education Association, and Iowa State Education Association. He was co-author of Lernen und Lachen and Rions. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery. The flag will be flown at half-mast Tuesday morning, and the Campanile bells will be played during the time of the funeral service in memory of Dr. Schaefer. Dr. Josef Schaefer Rites Tuesday UNI Prof for 45 Years Funeral services for Dr. Josef Schaefer, 73, of 2513 Ashland Avenue, Cedar Falls, will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Dr. Schaefer died at his home Friday night of a heart attack. He was born February 25, 1896, the son of Josef and Marie Schaefer in Stetten, Germany. He was graduated from the Gymnasium High School at Sigmaringen in Hohenzollern, Germany, in 1915 and, received his doctor's degree from the University of Freiburg in 1923. Dr. Schaefer came to the United States in 1924 and served as an attache at the German Consulate in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa in 1926 and served as professor of German for forty-five years. Upon retirement from UNI, Dr. Schaefer was associated with foreign languages. Dr: Schaefer was married August 18, 1928, to Ann Schaefer of Hechingen-Hohenzollern in Germany. He is survived by his widow and three daughters: Mrs. James Foy of Davenport, Mrs. John Brown of Sioux City, and Mrs. Rudolph Profaizer of Richardson, Texas, and also seven grandchildren. Others surviving are one brother and one sister in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister: Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Maurice A. Mullan officiating. Rosary will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Dahl-Van Hove Funeral Home by the Ladies Rosary Society and at 8 p.m. by the Parish Rosary Society. Friends may call after l p.m. today.
