James D. Welch

James D. Welch, 74, of West Plains, Missouri, formerly of Cedar Falls, died April 13, 2002, at Ozark Medical Center, West Plains, of natural causes. He was born June 11, 1927, in Lakeland, Florida, son of Dewey and Mary Bradford Welch.  He married Mary Louise Skaggs on February 17, 1955, in Thayer, Missouri. Mr. Welch was a teacher of orchestral music, teaching in Thayer, Cedar Rapids, then at Malcolm Price Lab School, Cedar Falls, retiring in 1987.  He also taught cello at Luther and Wartburg Colleges and played in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra and the Wartburg Symphony.  He was then an athletics trainer at the University of Northern Iowa for five years.  He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.  He also was aquatics director at Camp Ingawanis for ten summers. Survivors include:  his wife; a daughter, Sarah Ann Clausen of Cedar Falls; a son, James M. of Winona, Minnesota; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by:  a sister, Saye Belle Malchow. Memorial services:  will be later.  His body was donated to the University of Missouri Anatomy Department.
