Jack Daniel Heritage, 88, of Dike, died Thursday, October 5, 2006, at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown. He was born June 10, 1918, in Sioux City, son of William B. and Sadie H. Jones Heritage. He married Neva Muller on November 10, 1940, in Washta. She died December 30, 1995. He graduated in 1937 from Correctionville High School, Correctionville, and then began cutting meat at his hometown grocery store. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and afterwards returned home and began cutting meat for the Council Oak Stores. In January 1947, he and his wife moved to Dike and had their own meat market and grocery store, Heritage Market. They owned and operated the store until April 1966. Mr. Heritage then began working as a custodial supervisor for the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, retiring in 1979. Throughout this entire time, he continued to work as a butcher. He was still cutting meat at the grocery store in Dike until August 2005. He also was a volunteer fireman for Dike for thirty-six years, nineteen as fire chief. He also had been commander of the Dike American Legion Post No. 471. Survived by: a son, Barry of Dallas; two daughters. Penny Heritage of Eldon, Missouri, and Betty Roach of Las Vegas; and two grandchildren. Preceded in death by: a granddaughter; a brother, Harry; and two sisters, Frieda Heritage and Mary Elizabeth Schultz. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, with inurnment in Elmwood Cemetery, both in Dike. Full military rites will be conducted by Dike American Legion Post No. 471. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church, with the family present. Dike Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial fund: has been established.
