Hugh S. Buffum

To: Members of the Faculty Dr. H. S. Buffum, Professor of Education, Emeritus, passed away at his home, 2300 Franklin Street, at 6 00 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 1957, following a long period of illness. Funeral services have not yet been definitely determined but will probably be held Monday, October 21. Please check the local newspaper for this information. Mrs. Buffum and two sons survive Dr. Buffum. Dr. Buffum came from Lineville, Iowa, where he completed his early education. Later he received the B. A., M. A., and Ph. D. degrees from the State University of Iowa. He taught in the public schools of Iowa and later at the State University of Iowa; Cornell College; Valley City, North Dakota, Normal School; Marquette, Michigan, State Normal School, and Parsons College. He came to Iowa State Teachers College in 1914. He retired from full-time active service in 1947. Any member of the staff who wishes to attend the funeral service for Dr. Buffum may do so by making arrangements with his administrative head. The flag will be carried at half mast today and again during the half day when the funeral occurs and the Campanile will be played during the funeral service as an expression of respect for the long period of service rendered so devotedly and loyally by Dr. Buffum. Maucker, President Dr. Hugh Straight Buffum Dr. Hugh Straight Buffum, Professor of Education, Emeritus, passed away at his home at 2300 Franklin Street, Cedar Falls, Thursday evening, October 17, 1957, following a long illness. Dr. Buffum was born and secured his early education at Lineville, Iowa. He was a graduate of the State University of Iowa, having received his B. A. in 1901, his M. A. in 1902, and his doctorate in 1906. Dr. Buffum is survived by his widow and two sons. Both sons are teaching in the public schools of California. Dr. Buffum began his long record of service in the public schools of Iowa and later taught at the University of Iowa; Cornell College; Valley City, North Dakota, Normal School; Marquette, Michigan, State Normal School; and Parsons College. He began his service at this college in 1914 and was retired from full time active service in 1947. Dr. Buffum was a loyal and devoted member and worker in various organizations, among them being the Masonic Lodge, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Iowa Society of Mayflower Descendants. Although Dr. Buffum had many and varied interests, he will be best remembered by those who really knew him for his service to hundreds of teachers who sat in his classes, for his tireless labors over the years with the many lads who were privileged to be members of his scout troop, and for his long service as a member and officer in the College Hill Interdenominational Church, of which he was one of the founders. Be it resolved that we honor the memory of our colleague, and that a copy of this resolution be placed in the records of the Iowa State Teachers College and a copy be sent to the family, expressing our heartfelt gratitude for the life and service of this man. by L.
