Herbert Safford

                          Herb Safford Herbert Daniel Safford, age 75, of the Fredonia Mountain Nature Resort, Dunlap, TN, formerly of Cedar Falls, IA, passed away Tuesday morning, August 15, 2017 at his home. Herb was born and grew up in Burlington, VT. He held degrees from the University of Vermont, Yale University, and Columbia University. He served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. While working at VPI Herb became an enthusiastic caver and one of his proudest achievements was discovering virgin passage in Virginia’s Clover Hollow Cave. Herb served as director of several university libraries, most recently at the University of Northern Iowa where he was Dean of Library Services. While he was always a lover of books and reading he was an early and strong advocate of technology-based resources in libraries. He was preceded in death by his parents, Whitney and Janis Bailey Safford. Herb is survived by his wife, Barbara; his first wife, Deborah Dahl Safford, Socorro, NM; two daughters, Pamela Jane Safford (Dan Covell), New Canaan, CT and Suzanne Elizabeth Safford (Bill Charamut), Ft. Pierce, FL; two brothers, David (Joan) Safford, Willow Street, PA and Donald (Joan) Safford, Leesburg, FL; several nieces and nephews; beloved dog, Digger.
