Harvey Jason Hess III

                     Harvey Hess Harvey Jason Hess, III, 73, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born February 14, 1939, in Waterloo, son of Harvey J., Jr., and Esther Miller Hess. He graduated from Orange Township High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College, and received his bachelor's degree from McPherson College.  Mr. Hess received a master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.  He taught at Hawkeye Community College and the University of Northern Iowa; wrote for the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier and Spokane, Washington, newspapers; and taught at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls and the Waterloo Center of the Arts.  He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Parish.  He was a Haiku poet, librettist, critic, and author.  His Haiku was internationally published.  He was listed in the International Directory of Haiku Poets.  He composed five operas and received a lifetime achievement award for his Hawaiian lyric poetry, his teaching, and his art criticism. Survived by:  a sister, Lucy (Bill) Schempp of Decorah; a sister, Linda Hess of Spokane, Washington; a nephew, Corbin (Gretchen) Schempp of Decorah; and a niece, Bethany Schempp of Chicago. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Parish, Waterloo, with burial in Orange Township Cemetery.  Locke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
