Dr. Donald P. Hayes, 77, of Buckingham, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, following a heart attack. He was born August 16, 1932, on a farm in Black Hawk County, son of Thomas and Henrietta Hinz Hayes. Dr. Hayes graduated from Geneseo Consolidated High School in 1950; received his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Iowa in 1960, his master's degree in business economics from the University of Northern Iowa, his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in education in 1973, and completed post-doctoral studies at Iowa State University. He also served in the U.S. Army at Ladd AFB near Fairbanks, Alaska. He worked briefly at Rath Packing Company and John Deere.  He held numerous teaching and administrative positions in Iowa schools, including Grundy Center High School, Coe College, UNI, Stratford Community School, and Hawkeye Community College, in addition to farming near Buckingham.  He spoke at many seminars about humor and its impact on good health and was an avid historian and genealogist. Survived by:  two nephews, Thomas C. (Rhonda) of Waterloo and Craig S. of Minneapolis; two nieces, Deborah J. (James) Hurst of Cedar Falls and Suzanne C. (James Jr.) Hanna of La Porte City; two great-nephews, Jason Hanna of Boston and Tyler Hayes of Waterloo; and special friend, Glenna Lebeda of Haslett, Michigan. Preceded in death by: a brother, Carroll T.; and an aunt, Edna Hinz. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel, Eagle Center, with burial in Blessing Cemetery, rural Hudson. Graveside military rites by Traer Kubik Finch American Legion Post 142.  Public visitation from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.
