David K. Berninghausen

David Knipe Berninghausen, former resident of New Hartford and Nashua, Iowa, dies David Knipe Berninghausen, 85, died peacefully in his sleep in Peoria, Arizona, in April 2001. The son of Frederick and Lilian Knipe Berninghausen, he was born February 5, 1916, in Beaman, Iowa. He attended New Hartford School from third grade through eighth grade. He moved to Nashua with his family in 1928. David was graduated from Nashua High School, Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa), Drake University, and Columbia University. He was a librarian at Iowa State Teachers College, Alabama Southern, and Cooper Union in New York City, and Director of the Graduate School of Library Science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II he taught English to Naval Officer candidates at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Following the death of his wife, Elizabeth Sara Smith Berninghausen, he married Frances Strong Berdie Berninghausen and upon retirement from the University of Minnesota in 1981 they moved to Sun City, Arizona. He is survived by his second wife, Fran; by a sister, Mrs. Paul Sarnoff (Jane Virginia Berninghausen) of Kingsport, Tennessee; by his son, John Berninghausen of Cornwall, Vermont, Chair of the Chinese Department at Middlebury College, his daughter-in-law, Alice, and their two children, his grandson, Eric, a freshman this past year at Skidmore College, and his granddaughter, Gale, who will enter Middlebury College in the fall. A son, Eric Knipe Berninghausen, preceded him in death. Any donation made to a public library would be appropriate to his memory and his life's work.
