Alma L. McMahon

Mrs. Alma L. McMahon, a member of the faculty of Iowa State Teachers College from 1904 to 1915, died April 18, 1947, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, aged 87 years.  For the past fifteen years, Mrs. McMahon had lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, during the winter months and had spent the remainder of the year in the home of her son Dr. Arthur E. McMahon, B. A. 1915, a practicing physician in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Mrs. McMahon was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and of Stout Institute.  Under her direction, the Department of Home Economics at Iowa State Teachers College was organized and the first classes were held in September 1904.  In 1906, she transferred to the Department of Manual Arts in which she taught until her resignation in 1915. Her teaching career continued in the public schools of Wisconsin until 1929, when, at the age of 70, she retired.
