Mary (May) Malcolm Smith, Emeritus Professor of Education, died at 11:45 p.m. Monday, April 16, at the Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls of complications of age. Miss Smith was born at Cedar Rapids August 12, 1884, the daughter of Malcolm and Mary Ann Smith. She graduated from Coe College with the B.A. degree in 1905, attended the University of Chicago in 1918-1919, and earned her M.A. degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1929. Miss Smith taught for 13 years in the Cedar Rapids public school system as a primary teacher from 1905 to 1919. From 1919 until 1958 she taught at the University of Northern Iowa. She retired in 1958 as an Emeritus Professor of Education. Miss Smith was a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, the Association for Childhood Education, the American Association of University Women, and the American Association of University Professors. In 1961 an International Fellowship grant was established by the American Association of University Women in honor of Miss Smith and Miss Amy Arey, known as the Smith-Arey grant. It is given for leadership in Kindergarten-Primary Education. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, April 19, 1973, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The flag will be flown at half mast and the campanile bells will be played during the time of the service in memory of Miss Smith. 

 

MISS MAY (Mary) MALCOLM SMITH 

Funeral services for Miss May (Mary) Malcolm Smith, 88, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, who was a professor in the department of education at the University of Northern Iowa for many years, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel. The Rev. Reid Seastrand, chaplain at the home, will officiate. There will be a committal service at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids with Dr. Arnold Herbst of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at Dahl Van-Hove Schoof Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Thursday, and from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until service time at the Lutheran Home. Miss Smith died at Cedar Falls Lutheran home at 11:45 p.m. Monday. She formerly lived at 2320 College St. for many years. She was born on Aug. 12, 1884, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Malcolm and Mary Ann Smith. A graduate of Coe College in 1905 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Miss Smith received her M.A. degree from Columbia University, New York City. Miss Smith taught for 13 years in the Cedar Rapids public school system as primary teacher from 1905 to 1919. From 1919 until 1958 she taught at the University of Northern Iowa. She was an instructor from 1919 to 1929; and was promoted to associate professor of education in 1929. In 1947 she was promoted to professor. Miss Smith was a member of the National Education Association; the Iowa State Education Association, the Association for Childhood Education, the American Association of University Women, the Phi Lambda Theta Sorority, and the American Association of University Professors. She had served on the committee for curriculum for kindergarten and primary teaching at the University; and had also been a member of the Youth Student Welfare Committee. She had been a sponsor for many student groups. In 1961 an International Fellowship grant was established by the American Association of University Women in honor of Miss Smith and Miss Amy Arey, known as the Smith-Arey grant. Miss Smith was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived only by distant relatives.
