Francis E. "Dee" Smith, 85, of Cedar Falls, died August 22, 2002, at the Elizabeth E. Martin Center, Cedar Falls, of natural causes. He was born November 3, 1916, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son of Roy Bordman and Edith Elsbree Smith. He married Judith Lenzer in 1942, in Iowa City, and they were divorced in 1948. He married Penelope King Anthon in 1949, in Cedar Rapids. She died in 1976. He married Linda Molla in 1989, and she died in 1996. Mr. Smith served during World War II in the U. S. Navy as a pharmacist's mate. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his master's and doctorate in English literature in 1950 from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He taught English literature at Colby College, Waterville, Maine, from 1948 to 1949; and was a professor of. English and humanities at the University of Northern Iowa from 1950 to 1979. Survived by: three sons, Christopher Anthon, Rockford, Illinois, Michael Anthon of Sooke, British Columbia, and Matthew Smith of Olympia, Washington; a daughter, Devon E. Ward of Cedar Falls, eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara E. Smith of Jacksonville, Florida. Preceded in death by: a sister, Hazel M. Stone. Memorial services: 2 p. m. Saturday at the Western Home East Solarium. His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: may be directed to the Iowa Branch of the Nature Conservancy.
