Vivian M. Shane, 88, of Waterloo, died June 27, 2009, at Lakeview Landing of cancer. She was born November 11, 1920, in Masonville, daughter of William J. and Della F. Brunkhorst Wintakger. She married Loren F. Taylor in 1966, and they were later divorced. She married Charles R. "Dick" Shane on October 6,1978, at the Universalist Church, Minneapolis. She graduated from Lamont High School in 1938 and attended Mercy Hospital Nursing School, Davenport, where she received her RN certificate. She was a registered nurse working in area hospitals and, later, at the University of Northern Iowa Infirmary until 1976.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society. She has been a member of the American Nurses Association; Cedar Falls nurses club, Chapter Z of PEO, Cedar Valley Historical Society, ACLU, UNI New Horizons Band, in which she played saxophone, Planned Parenthood and Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross and its Disaster Action Team, locally and at national disasters in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas.
Survived by: three daughters, Emily Taylor of Dallas, Pamela Taylor (James Rebstock) of Gainesville, Florida, and Cynthia Taylor (Alex Gomez) of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Brittany J. Beckwith, Taylor Gomez, and Raleigh Rebstock; and a sister, Annamae Fabric of Phoenix. Preceded in death by: a son, Larry Craig Taylor.
Family-directed services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Unitarian- Universalist Society of Black Hawk County, Cedar Falls, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Masonville. The family will greet friends after the service. Memorials: may be directed to Friendship Village Auxiliary or Cedar Bend Humane Society.
