Groundskeeper

Gordon Bennett Porter, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, February 14, 2005, at Sartori Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. 

He was born October 16, 1915, in Sioux City, son of Roy E. and Mary Mayme Bennett Porter. He married Jean Parman on May 12, 1942, at the Congregational Church, Cedar Falls. Mr. Porter farmed in Black Hawk County for over thirty-five years until 1968, then was a groundskeeper at the University of Northern Iowa for fourteen years, retiring in 1982. 

Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Bradd (Jane) of Garnavillo and Ross of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Kay (James) Westendorf of Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane Berninghausen of Accokeek, Maryland, and Marjory (Bill) Peard of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Preceded in death by: two brothers, Robert and John; and a brother-in-law, William H. Berninghausen. 

Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at United Church of Christ, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and for an hour before services Friday at the church on Friday.
