John D. "Mike" Mixsell, 74, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. He was born March 22, 1939, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, son of John D. and Josephine Cummings Mixsell. He married Judy Bruner June 13, 1964, and they were later divorced. Mike was employed in various administrative positions at the University of Northern Iowa. He was a United States Army veteran.
Survived by: a son, Robert (Matt) of Davenport; four daughters, Mary (Chris) Foy of Waverly, Heidi (Juan) Ulloa of Lansing, Kansas, Heather Brustkern of Waterloo, and Kate (Mike Thompson) Mixsell of Dubuque; five grandsons, Andrew, Juan, Thomas, Jacob, and Sam; five granddaughters, Madeline, Katie, Isabelle, Sydney, and Kyla; and two brothers, Steve (Maggie) of Santa Barbara, California, and Hank (Sally) of New Haven, Connecticut. Preceded in death by: an infant son, John Davis III.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with inurnment at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carroll. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, following the services. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:00 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Mike was an avid UNI wrestling fan and member of the Wrestling Booster Club. For many years his booming voice could be heard over the West Gym as announcer of every home meet. His passion and love for his grandchildren showed as he stood in the stands and cheered them on in everything from soccer, to football, to wrestling. His supportive presence will be greatly missed.
