Ruth AlIgenett (Minish) Meeker, 85, a resident of Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, died there, Thursday, October 15, 2009. Services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. The family will greet friends 4-7 p.m. Monday, October 19, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion. Graveside services: 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Geneseo Cemetery, rural Dysart.
Survivors include her two sons, Roger (Sallie) Meeker of Apple Valley, California, and Gene (Anita) Meeker of Central City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean M. Stoner of Mt. Vernon; one sister-in-law, Zelda Minish Kinkead of Springville; one niece; and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; an infant son, Ross; and a brother, George Minish.
Ruth was born March 11, 1924, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Archie R. and Elva L. (Voorhees) Minish. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and attended the University of Iowa. Ruth was married to Floyd L. Meeker June 3, 1945, at the bride's home near Viola, and resided in Waterloo until Floyd died in 2000. Ruth worked for many years at the University of Northern Iowa, John Deere and Co., and Flinn & Saito Architects. She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. She was active in the UMW since 1947. Ruth sang duets with her sister in her youth, and also sang in the Waterloo United Methodist Church Choir for six years. She was an active Cub Scouts leader, loved to crochet and sew, and enjoyed fishing and camping. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Ruth's memory.
