Harriet Kin Han Ma, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.
She was born July 7, 1923, in Guangzhou, China, daughter of James San Fong and Lee Mo Tak. She married Fred Yiew Min Ma in Guangzhou on October 10, 1947. He died July 23, 1996. She was educated in China at Zhong Shan University, receiving an advanced degree in education administration with a music minor. She worked as a school principal at Guangdong Elementary School, where she also taught music. The couple immigrated to the United States after the 1949 Communist takeover of China. She had been an adjunct professor of Chinese language at the University of Northern Iowa for thirteen years and also had been employed by Woolverton Printing Company.
Survived by: three daughters, Vivien M. (Roderick W.) Anderson of Powder Springs, Georgia, Laurinda M. (James G.) Romportl of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Symone K. Ma of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Kin Chuen of China; and two sisters, Kin Sheung of San Francisco and Kin Nor, also of China. Preceded in death by: a daughter, Sylbie Blau; two brothers; and two sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with inurnment later in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Home, with family present 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.
