Dr. Fred W. Lott, Jr., 85, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Center of Alzheimer's disease. He was born October 8, 1917, in Cherry Fork, Ohio, son of Fred W. Lott, Sr., and Margaret Greene Lott. He married Kathryn Deever December. 20, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Lott served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He received his A. B. and B. S. degrees, magna cum laude, from Cedarville College in Ohio and his M. A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan. Dr. Lott was a teaching fellow at the University of Michigan from 1947 to 1949. He was then a professor of mathematics from 1949 to 1984 and the assistant vice president for academic affairs from 1971 to 1984 at the University of Northern Iowa. He was co-author of the mathematics textbook Elementary Analysis and was also a consultant to both Rath Packing Company and the Department of Defense and was a member of several professional mathematics organizations.
Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Diana Kathryn (Carl) Anderson of West Des Moines and Patricia Susan Lott (Alan Lincoln) of Seattle; two grandchildren, Julie Ann (Denis) LeRoy of Cedar Falls and Dorothy Sue (John) Walker of Terra Haute, Indiana; five great-grandchildren, Alexander Shon LeRoy, Kathryn Lucille LeRoy, Samantha Emily LeRoy, Devan Elizabeth Melberg, and Autumn Cierra Walker; three sisters, Betty Lou (Dick) Miller of Ocala, Florida, Peg (Herb) Muenstermann of Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, and Nancy (Viru) Henry of Orissa, India; and a nephew, Dr. Anil Henry of Nashville, Tennessee. Preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Dr. Fred W. Lott, III; four brothers, Bill, Charles, Bob, and Jack; and a nephew, Ajit Henry Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military committal rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m., and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
