Elmer J. Kortemeyer, Jr., 77, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at Allen Hospital. He was born February 15, 1926, in Waterloo, son of Elmer J. and Edna Yeager Kortemeyer. He married Joy Gillespie on September 9, 1950, in Englewood, Colorado. Mr. Kortemeyer received a master's degree in education from the University of Wyoming. He established and held the first position of Head Athletic Trainer for the University of Northern Iowa and was Professor Emeritus--Athletic and Physical Education Department. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U .S. Army Air Corps. Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Karl of Dallas, Texas, and Paul of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Clare Wright of Cedar Falls and Katy Kortemeyer of Waterloo; and two grandchildren. Preceded in death by: three brothers, William, John, and Richard; and two sisters, Eleanor Erickson and Irma McCarty. Services: 2:00 p.m. today at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery chapel, with burial in the cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until services at the chapel.. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.
