Kittrell Elementary hires new principal

A new principal has been selected for Kittrell Elementary School in Waterloo. Kathy Konigsmark, currently a teacher at Edison Elementary, will assume administrative duties next month.

Konigsmark holds a master of arts in education degree, with certification as an elementary principal, from the University of Northern Iowa, and a bachelor of arts in education degree in elementary teaching and coaching, also from UNI. She has been a teacher in the Waterloo Schools since 1984, serving in Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Edison elementaries and Hoover Middle School. She was also the head women's golf coach and head women's tennis coach at UNI.

Konigsmark was one of five Iowa Distinguished Teachers in 1996 and a 1994 Gold Star teacher in Black Hawk County. She was also selected as one of 20 teachers in the United States to participate in a civic education institute at the James Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship.

Konigsmark will assume her duties at Kittrell next month, following a transition period with the current interim administrator. Fred Stewart has served as interim principal for Kittrell this school year, replacing Diane McCarty who had resigned. Stewart retired from the Waterloo Schools in 1999 after having served as principal at Kittrell for eight years.
