Donald Atwell Kelly, of Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio, died Friday, February 23, 2007, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, Ohio. Donald was born on June 14, 1924, in Middletown, New York, to Edward J. and Florence Atwell Kelly. Donald was married to Ruth Hohler from 1948 to 1979. In 1979, in New Hempstead, New York, he married Nancy C. Nahm. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2005. He served in the U.S. Army 8th Armored Division during World War II. Donald loved to fish and was an avid Oakland Athletics fan. Donald had spent some time as a sports reporter for the Middletown Times. From 1954-1964, he was public relations director, sports information director, and a journalism instructor at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He attended the University of Iowa from 1948-1951 and graduated with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in journalism. He retired from the University of Northern Iowa in 1987 after serving as the director of Public Information Services for many years.
Donald was a member at Firelands Presbyterian Church, Port Clinton. He was a member of the Port Clinton Rotary Club. Survivors include: children, Mark Kelly of Titonka, David (Darla) Kelly of Waterloo, and Ellen (Ken) Mange of Portage, Michigan; grandchildren, Michael Kelly, Erin Wagner, Brennan Mange, and Brian Mange. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Edward Kelly. Local memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment with graveside services will be held at Glen Wild Cemetery, outside of Middletown, at a later date. Local arrangements are being handled by the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home.
