Dr. Nellie Delight Hampton, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Sartori Memorial Hospital. She was born July 22, 1916, in Standard, Louisiana, daughter of Edward L. and Lizzie T. Prince Hampton, Sr. She and her family moved to the Jefferson City, Missouri, area in 1918, where she attended public schools. Nellie Hampton received an Associate of Arts degree from Jefferson City Junior College in 1936. She then taught in several Missouri public schools. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1942. She then enrolled at the University of Iowa, where her graduate work centered upon development of sections of the Iowa Tests of Basic skills. She earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1945. She then joined the faculty of the Iowa State Teachers College in 1945 and traveled to all of the Iowa counties and made in-service educational presentations for thousands of Iowa teachers. She received a doctoral degree in education from the University of Wisconsin in 1951. She was employed with the University of Northern Iowa for thirty-six years, beginning as an instructor in 1945 and retiring as a professor of education in 1981, the last eleven years in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Nellie Hampton enjoyed gardening, cooking, photography, fishing, needlework, travel, and toy poodles. She taught an adult Bible class at First Baptist Church for over forty years.
Survived by: a brother, Ed (Doris) Hampton, Jr., of Columbia, Missouri; a nephew, Edward Lee (Barbara) Hampton, III, of Seattle, Washington; a niece, Mary Ellen Flowers of Columbia, Missouri; great nephew Justin Hampton of Seattle, Washington; great niece Kim Darby and spouse Chris of Kent, Washington; great nephew Travis Flowers of Columbia, Missouri; and friends, Rita Leslie, and Jean and Lyle Harms, all of Cedar Falls. Preceded in death by: her parents; and a sister, Marjorie Tegarden.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Richardson Funeral Home, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
