Ruth G. Fairbanks, 81, of 708 Lorraine Avenue, Waterloo, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness. She was born March 8, 1921, in Grinnell, daughter of Willard and Elizabeth McHugh Gilchrist. She married Verlon Fairbanks on October 6, 1972, in Cedar Falls. Mrs. Fairbanks graduated from American Institute of Business, Des Moines, and was coordinator of academic publications at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, retiring in 1982. She was past president of Black Hawk/Bremer League of Women Voters.
Survived by: her husband; two daughters, Cynthia E. Cordes of Chicago and Bridget A. Hayes of Las Cruces, New Mexico; a son, Alan Bruce Hayes of Marvel, Arizona; two stepsons, Terry Fairbanks of Breezy Point, Minnesota, and Jeffrey Fairbanks of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Kathryn Henderson of Greeley, Colorado; ten grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Preceded in death by: three sisters, Ellen Gilchrist, Gladys Melberg, and Gretchen Hesla; and a brother, Arch M. Gilchrist.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. Friends may call for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: may be directed to the church or Salvation Army.
