John Freeman Aldrich, Sr., 85, of Cedar Falls, died at home Monday, June 1, 2009, of natural causes. He was born May 29, 1924, in Providence, Rhode Island, son of Daniel and Marion Farnum Aldrich. He married Avis Finberg on July 9, 1949, at Bemidji, Minnesota. She died August 11, 1996. Mr. Aldrich was a teacher and coach at Northern University High School for forty-three years, retiring in 1986.
Survived by: two sons, John Freeman, Jr. and Stephen (Heidi), both of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Deborah Hodge of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and Leanne Aldrich-Parrishof Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren, Linsey (Ryan) Shultz, Luke (Whitney) Aldrich, Olivia Aldrich, Elizabeth Aldrich, Bailey White, Avrey Parrish, Nicholas (Neli) Hodge, and Morgan Hodge; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert (Louise) of Rhode Island and Stephen (Sandy) of Florida. Preceded in death by: a daughter, Laurie Ann Aldrich; a son-in-law, Harold "Gomer" Hodge; a sister, Eleanor Dodge; and a brother, Daniel G., Jr.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church. There will be no visitation. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial fund: will be established in lieu of flowers.
