Dr. Merritt E. Melberg, Emeritus Professor of Education, died Wednesday, 29 October 1980, at Northwest Community Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. His death was attributed to a heart attack, Dr. Melberg was born at Norway, Iowa, 14 March 1916. Degrees were earned at Iowa State University (B.S. and M.S.), and the University of Northern Colorado (Ed.D.). He served as a high school teacher at Ames, Iowa, and Harris, Iowa, and as Superintendent of Schools at Greeley, Iowa. Before joining the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa, Dr. Melberg was a faculty member at three other collegiate institutions: Iowa State University, Arkansas State Teachers College, and Northeast Louisiana State College, In 1958 Dr., Melberg joined the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa. He was affiliated with the Department of Educational Psychology and Foundations. He assumed emeritus status in 1973.
Contemporaries of Dr. Melberg will recall that among his many contributions to the university and community were extensive efforts in behalf of the Credit Union and substantial involvement in the development of plans for the Education Center. Dr. Melberg is survived by his wife, Gladys, and four sons. Eric resides at Janesville, Iowa, John at Des Moines, Iowa, Martin at Little Rock, Arkansas, and William at McKinney, Texas. A sister and brother also survive. Funeral services will be held at McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, Arkansas, on Monday, 3 November, at 1:00 p.m. In recent years Dr. and Mrs. Melberg have resided in Conway at 2411 Parkwood Drive (72032), The flag will be flown at half mast during the time of the memorial service.
