Dr. Leah F. Hiland, 71, of Cedar Falls, died. Friday, January 16, 2004, at her home of lung cancer. She was born December 30, 1932, in Lebanon, Indiana, daughter of Ernest and Zora Martin Hiland. She received a B. S. in 1955, an M. A. L. A. in 1960 and a Ph. D. in 1973, all from Indiana University.
Dr. Hiland taught at Flossmoor High School, Flossmoor, Indiana, on a military base in Germany, and then at Merrillville High School, Merrillville, Indiana. She had been a visiting assistant professor in the department of librarianship at Western Michigan University in 1965, assistant professor in the School of Library Science at the University of Iowa from 1969 to 1972, and assistant professor in the Department of Library Science at UNI from 1972 until her retirement in 1994. She was also coordinator of the Division of School Library Media Studies at UNI from 1991 to 1994.
Survivors include: a brother, George M. (Kitty) Hiland of Rockville, Indiana; and a sister, Carol Hiland of Lebanon, Indiana. Preceded in death by: an infant brother; and a sister, Lois Wright.
Services: 4 p.m. Monday at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Indiana. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
