John David Deines, 80, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, November 11, 2013, at Liebe Care Center, Greene. He was born October 9, 1933, in Marshalltown, son of the Reverend Ishmael "I. J." and Dorothy MacAllister Deines. He married Martha Grace Andrews on June 12,1955, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Greene.
The Rev. Deines graduated from Greene High School, Wartburg College, and, in 1959, later from Wartburg Theological Seminary. He served as pastor at Salem Lutheran Church, Correctionville; was ordained at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Greene; served from 1961 to 1969 as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport; and served as campus pastor at the Lutheran Student Center, University of Northern Iowa, from 1969 to 1999.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, David (Julie) of Cedar Park, Texas, and Dana (Samantha) of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Dawn (Keith) Deines-Christensen of Decorah, Diedre (Doug) Schumacher of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Darla Deines-Hollis (Robbie Verbeek) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Danette (Shane) Norris of Longwood, Florida; twelve grandchildren; a sister, Carol (Jim) Neessen; and two sisters-in-law, Judy and Fontell Deines. Preceded in death by: two brothers, Joe and Don.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Stevens Memorial Chapel, Ames, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the Lutheran Student Center at the University of Northern Iowa.
