Howard William Lyon, 81, of Cedar Falls, died at home Tuesday, December 7, 2004. He was born August 12, 1923, in Denison, son of Allen Lawton and Jessie May Luney Lyon. He married Marcia A. McKee June 8, 1947, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Mr. Lyon received his B. A. and M. A. from the University of Iowa. He was professor of chemistry at Northwestern College, Orange City, from 1949 to 1956. He was then employed at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring as professor emeritus in 1992. He also served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society, an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and a member of the Metropolitan Chorale and New Horizons Band. He was an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors. include: his wife; a son, Howard (Amy) of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Wendy A. (Robert) Prigge of Atlantic and Stephanie J. (Gregory) Marra of Cedar Falls; eleven grandchildren, Rachel (Joshua) Marra Hagen, Nathan Marra, Hillary Kirkpatrick, Nick Prigge, Alexis Prigge, Tim Lyon, Jessica Lyon, Emily Lyon, Christopher Lyon, Emily Kaczinski, and Tim Haas; a great-granddaughter, Sabina Hagen; a brother, Dr. Donald G. (Jeanne) Lyon of Lime Springs; and a sister-in-law, Ruth G. Lyon of Davenport. Preceded in death by: two brothers, Robert and Warren Lyon, and a sister, Marilyn DeValois.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to Habitat for Humanity, the church or the UNI Foundation in lieu of flowers.
